Update: Kedarnath Road Status

After the traditional 14 km trek route – Gaurikund-Rambara-Kedarnath – washed away in flash floods last June, the state government is working on the alternate trek route according to reports. The new route proposed by Uttarkashi based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is said to be longer than than old route.

The new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat in a meeting of top state officials has ordered the completion of work on a 22 km alternative route between Gaurikund and Kedarnath before the start of char dham yatra.

The condition of road from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag is in good condition with a few bumpy patches here and there. However, the real challenge for BRO is the 70 km road from Rudrapryag to Sonprayag and the 5 km road from Sonprayag to Gaurikund, which is in really bad shape. According to reports only jeeps may ply between Sonprayag and Gaurikund and if this stretch is not completed, pilgrims may have start on foot from Sonprayag itself.
